James holds a Bproc, LLB BA hons (psyc) and a PhD in law (WITS).

He was an academic at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, from 2000-2014 where he attained the rank of Associate Professor. He has 16 accredited publications to his name and, in 2018, published a book entitled ‘The Responsible Mind in South African Criminal Law’.

In 2014-2015 he assisted the state in the appeal against the culpable homicide conviction of Oscar Pistorius to the Supreme Court of Appeal.

In 2015 he did his pupillage at the Johannesburg Society of Advocates and started practice as an advocate in December of that year.

In 2019 he served two terms as an acting Judge of the High Court of South Africa – in the Gauteng Local Division. He served one term in criminal court and the second in civil court.

He returned to practice as an advocate in September 2019.
